Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Spanning 150 miles along the American Canadian border, this vast wilderness of lakes and waterways has over 1,500 miles of canoe routes. Rent a canoe and paddle off the beaten track like never before.

Mississippi National River & Recreation Area
This 72-mile long river park showcases the famed Mississippi River and passes through the heart of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Join a ranger-led talk or hike along the waterfront.

Itasca State Park
Established in 1891, this is the oldest state park in Minnesota. Most visitors are here to see the headwaters of the Mississippi River, but there’s also fantastic hiking, boating and wildlife viewing.

Chippewa National Forest
Experience North American nature at its best at this protected forest complete with 1,300 lakes and plenty of developed campsites. You can also obtain a backcountry permit and head out into the wilderness.

Pigeon River High Falls
Located in Grand Portage State Park, the High Falls of the Pigeon River is the highest waterfall in Minnesota. A short, paved trail takes you right up to the falls for spectacular views.

Hawk Ridge Observatory
Located in Duluth, the world’s most inland seaport, Hawk Ridge is a premier destination for seeing migrating birds, especially raptors. Look out for bald eagles, golden eagles, ospreys and many types of hawk.

Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge
Discover 45 miles of trails for hiking and biking in summer and snowshoeing and cross country skiing in winter at this nature reserve. The river valley is also an important site for many migratory birds.

Minneapolis-St. Paul
