The old show biz saying goes, ‘Never work with children and animals’ but when your pet is part of the family, taking photos of them for the hallway gallery is non-negotiable. Avoid using a flash. A startled or stressed animal is no fun to photograph. Choose a day when there’s a warm, natural glow, or at least plenty of light to play with.
1

Where is your pet happiest? Curled up on the sofa or bounding through a local park? Photograph your furry friend somewhere that will bring out its personality.
3

Think about the background. Certain colours will accentuate the hue of your pet’s coat or eyes. Or maybe your red setter looks particularly dashing among greenery?
5

If you want to have more creative control than a mobile phone can offer, invest in an SLR camera. A 50mm lens will get you close, and a high shutter speed will capture action.
7

Toys and small treats will be your best friend at a pet photoshoot. Use them to get your pet to look in a particular direction or jump in the air. Squeaky toys can create fun expressions too.
2

An extra pair of hands to throw treats, make noises, squeak toys, soothe and cajole will prove essential when you’re focussing on the shot.
4

Get down to your pet’s level so that the eyes become the focus. A direct-to-camera shot will let everyone know just how unique your four-legged friend is.
6

Your pet’s physical and emotional well-being always beats getting a good shot. Don’t place them in a compromising situation or at risk. Pet insurance may provide peace of mind too.
